The leader of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC), Dr. Supo Ayokunle has called on Nigerian youths to participate in politics but with the right motives.

Ayokunle said prayers and individual contributions were critical to making the world a better place to live as everybody desires it to be.The General Overseer of Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, Rev. Felix Meduloye who also urged Christians to go into politics said nothing was wrong about the idea.

He stressed however that pastors do not give their full support to the idea of joining politics due to the way political leaders handle and use it to oppress others.

Ayokunle, who spoke with The Guardian, urged Christians to ensure they receive directions from God before going into politics and not join politics because others were doing so.

“Politics should be seen as a calling and a means of true service and not as an easy means of making money. It is a pity that our leaders have failed in their duties, forgetting the biblical injunction in Matthew 6:33 that said: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you”.

He said if we leave politics in the hands of the ungodly people, they will continue to make life unbearable for us but before going into it as a believer.

“Before joining politics, be sure the call of God must is in your life and be ready to be accountable just as pastor will say he or she received the calling of God, you must hear clearly that God wants you in politics.

I don’t want to dabble into politics the same way I don’t want CAN to be a stooge in the hands of politicians. I want a CAN that can stand on its own. I don’t want a patronizing attitude from anybody in government because CAN is a father to all of them because most of them grew up in the Churches.

Speaking on it leadership programme scheduled for April 17 to April 22, at the Foursquare Camp on Lagos- Ibadan Expressway, Meduloye said the theme of the forum: “The Mind Of Christ” came at no better time than now that country is currently in a recession that needs God intervention to reverse.

On his part, Ayokunle said this year’s convention would focus on“How We Can Move Forward Overcoming The Challenges Of Life” will hold at the Abuja National Stadium from April 22 to April 27 and would loaded with blessings from God for his people the country.
