Directorate begins training for unemployed person in Abia

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE), has kicked off a three-month intensive training, under its Environmental Beautification Training Scheme (EBTS), for some unemployed school leavers in Abia State.
The State Commissioner for Youth Development, Hagler Okorie, said in view of the fact that the earning from the oil sector can no longer support the economy fully, there is need for diversification to engage the ever increasing unemployed especially among school leavers.
Represented by the Ministry’s Director of Youth Empowerment, Darlington Ahuruonye, it was gathered that the 25 trainees would be paid stipends to cover transportation and others, although the details were not given.
“But despite this, there is still hope for the youths. So you trainees must take the NDE training seriously so that in the end, you can apply what you learnt because what you learn is what will carry you on for life. The state government would continue to support NDE programmes.”
Speaking at the kick-off of the ceremony at the Abia NDE office at Old Umuahia, the NDE Acting Director General, Kunle Obayan, said the choice and emphasis on specialised training on soft and hard land scraping is a carefully designed initiative to align the trainees with the current demands of society’s economic activities.
The Acting DG, who was represented by Engineer Tony Okum, said the EBTS was conceptualised by the Special Public Works (SPW) department of the NDE.He called on all categories of the unemployed in Nigeria, including those about to retire from service, to embrace and benefit from the programmes NDE developed over the years.
He however pointed out that the astronomical growth in unemployment and dwindling economic fortunes have made it impossible for NDE alone to tackle unemployment hence the need for partnership among governments, NGOs, CBOs, stakeholders and affluent members of the society especially in the task of resettlement of the beneficiaries.
Urging the trainees, who pledged to take the training seriously with a view to applying the acquired skill thereafter for their own benefit and others, the NDE DG added: “Grasp all aspects of the package so as to optimise the opportunity and justify the investment on them by the federal government.”
He asked the Master Trainers to diligently transfer the required technology to the Trainees.State NDE Coordinator, Ojei Onyebuchi, while congratulating the chosen Trainees and charging them to abide by the rules governing the three months duration training, warned that failure to abide by the rules would attract sanctions.
