FG, UN train 115 women on skills, trades
The Federal Government and United Nations Women Support Empowerment Association in Japan (UN-WOSEA) are to train 115 Borno women in skills acquisitions and entrepreneurship.
The training programme is on food processing, vegetable and pomade making. Flagging off the three-day training programme in Maiduguri at the Borno State Women Development Centre, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Alhassan disclosed that the training is being implemented under the National Economic Empowerment of Women (NEEW) programme in six targeted states of the country.
She said that as most of the women are affected by Boko Haram insurgency and losing some of their breadwinners and children to terrorism, the trainees would be fully empowered through various skills acquisitions to earn income.
Alhassan, who was represented by Koko Hamisu, Deputy Director, Economic Services said that women are the backbone and means of training their survived children.
She said that the skills acquisition training will develop and increase the women’s capacity building to become self-reliant, instead of dependency syndrome during the six-year Boko Haram insurgency.
She urged the women to take their training seriously by concentrating on how they will choose, locate and diversify their businesses in the state.
“This training will avail all of you to source funds to run and continue with the businesses and entrepreneurships. Some of you may be employing five to 10 other women, after this three-day training in Maiduguri,” the Minister said.
Throwing more light on on-going skills acquisition, the Borno State commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Fanta Baba Shehu said that the 115 women are drawn from four councils of Gwoza, Jere, Gubio and Shani.
She said that 10, 000 women are targeted for the training programme, while 8, 700 have filled their forms and returned to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Bank of Industry (BoI) to commence further training of women in skills acquisition.
She added that the BoI will after the training of women, will disburse take-off grants to commence applying the skills they acquired from this centre.
“Don’t discard or lose the tags of participation on your chests. The identifications cards are the proofs of acquiring various skills from this workshop to collect the take-off grants from BoI,” said Shehu at the workshop.
