ICSAN boss proffers ways out of economic recession

A sustained fight against corruption by the Federal Government remains one of the veritable ways to exit the economic recession afflicting the country, the President and Chairman of Council of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN), Dr. Nat Ofo, has said.

The ICSAN boss, who spoke ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Institute, stated that the right punishment must be meted out to those found guilty of corruption no matter whose ox will be gored.

He said: “We are in economic recession because things are still not being done in the right way. The real problem is corruption. Some people pile up money not to boost our economy but to boost the economies of other countries or other lands.”

To end recession and restore the nation back to the path of prosperity, he said government should fight corruption to a standstill by apportioning the right punishment to serve as deterrent to people who are either into corrupt acts or intend to perpetrate corruption.

His words: “Government has not done anything to show that we are in a bad situation. As long as people think they can commit crime and go away with it, they will still continue to commit crimes. If the judiciary is the problem not to achieve this, government should deal with it. When leadership sets the right tone, everybody will comply.

“No amount of money poured into the economy will solve our problem until we begin to do the right thing and punish those found guilty of doing wrong things.”

Speaking on the anniversary, he said the celebration would be rounded off with the Institute hosting a grand ball on Friday, November 18, 2016 at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, where personalities would be conferred with awards and honorary membership.

With the theme, ‘Corporate Governance as a Springboard for Socio-Economic Renaissance’, the Institute has carefully selected a group of professionals who will present papers on the theme and sub-themes.

“The conference is purposely packaged to attract foreign delegates as well as participants from the private and public sectors of the economy to share their experience”, Ofo said.
