The union, therefore, appealed to the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to intervene and ensure that May pension is paid without further delay to alleviate the sufferings of its members.

NUP said efforts to find out the reasons for the non-payment did not yield any result, as there was no convincing explanation from the government, noting that civil servants have long received their May salaries.

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has decried the non-payment of May pension to all retirees across the country.

In a statement, National President of the union, Abel Afolayan and General Secretary, Actor Zal lamented the hardship that the non-payment of the May pensions has caused its members across the country, most of who have become endangered species on account of their old age and failing health.

NUP said efforts to find out the reasons for the non-payment did not yield any result, as there was no convincing explanation from the government, noting that civil servants have long received their May salaries.

The union, therefore, appealed to the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to intervene and ensure that May pension is paid without further delay to alleviate the sufferings of its members.

NUP urged Osinbajo to work towards establishing a rule that would make the payment of pension possible by the 25th of every month, saying, “this could be one of the best legacies that this government would bequeath to the nation as it is done in other normal climes that recognise and appreciate the labour and services of their past heroes.”

Meanwhile, the Abia state Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has lauded Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s assurance that he would settle all arrears of salaries and pensions owed government workers and pensioners in the state by the end of July.

Its Chairman, Uchenna Obigwe expressed hope that the declaration will come to fruition, saying the governor “fully understood the needs of workers and has fully committed himself to addressing the issues notwithstanding the economic challenges.”
