The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture of Umudike, has established an alternative dispute resolution Centre to provide the University community an alternative platform outside court litigation to resolve labour related disputes and conflicts.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Francis Otunta, who was speaking while receiving the leadership of the Abia State Congress, led by its Chairman, Uchenna Obigwe, said dialogue is an effective instrument in dispute and conflict resolution and urged labour unions in the country to adopt it.

The Coordinator of the Centre, Mrs. Bertha Otunta, said the Centre would supplement litigation through the provision of enhanced, timely and user-friendly access to justice within and beyond the University.

According to her, knowledgeable persons in dispute resolution will be educating members of the MOUAU community towards embracing this medium of resolving disputes/conflicts outside the regular courts. She said: “The Centre will comply with the principle of natural justice of hearing the other side of the story in order to give attention to complaints by persons who have been hurt by other colleagues or by the system.”
