Unity Bank Plc has charged women to acquire financial management skills that would enable them create wealth for long term needs.

The Head, SME Banking of Unity Bank, Opeyemi Ojesina stated this at the ‘Lagos and the woman conference’ held in Lagos at the recently.

Presenting a paper titled: ‘The Place of the Women Entrepreneur’, Ojesina, urged women to shift from mere ‘buying and selling’ to creating businesses that fulfill basic economic needs.

He charged women to have a clear understanding of the concepts of the businesses they engage in, so as to attract the needed support from banks and other financial institutions.

Ojesina, who noted that good business ideas are as important as finance for budding entrepreneurs, urged women to ensure that they share creative business ideas as that could attract more funding for the business.

“Believe that you can start small and shelve the idea that you must have all the money or materials to take off. Existing businesses attract funding easier than yet-to-takeoff ones,” Ojesina said.

He commended the Amazing Amazons, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) under the leadership of Mercy Makinde for initiating the conference’.

According to him, the awareness created by the conference will not only promote entrepreneurship development but also build the confidence of women in their pursuit of financial independence.

He noted that the initiative tallies with Unity Bank’s focus of supporting rural economy, saying this was the Bank’s contribution to reducing the vulnerability of the rural dwellers and creating opportunities that could enhance their standard of living.
