Rack Centre, the Sub Sahara Africa’s premium data centre and colocation services provider has declared it’s preparedness to accommodate more customers to its facilities in view of the boom in Big Data and network hosting services in the region.

Mr. Ayotunde Coker, managing director of Rack Centre, disclosed this as the facility, attained the Tier III Certification of Constructed Facility (TCCF) from the Uptime Institute, joining the elite data centres in the world to be so certified and the first in the West African sub-region.

The facility with close to 300 racks capacity at the moment can within six months double the capacity including the power expansion.Mr. Coker said that the TCCF certification was achieved after a thorough forensic assessment of all aspects of Rack Centre’s facilities and operations by Uptime Institute experts team from the US and UK.

Speaking on rack Centre readiness for surge in big data and network hosting demands, he told Nigeria CommunicationsWeek “Our calculations show the number of data centres is inefficient. That is why we are trying to unlock that market. There are two aspects to be considered. Big Data is part of our lives now and will continue to grow; whether it is the volume of financial transaction, your mobile phone is constantly sending data with 40% compound annual growth in bid data.

It will even continue as broadband penetration increases. Analyses have shown that for every 10% increase in broadband, you get up to 1.5% economic benefit.

“These call for a data centre to warehouse the data. As businesses, for instance, start to realize they don’t need to invest their capital on building data centre, it will also reflect on their balance sheet. In fact, no bank will worry about constructed Tier III certification but the standard shows it should. So, at that point, we shall have more standard co-location data centres and the better for us. In essence, with the population we have Big Data is going to be huge in this clime”.

When asked how prepared is Rack Centre to accommodate more customers, he said “We proved in our last facility expansion that we have the project delivery engineering discipline to ensure quality and on time. We have already prepared the doubling of our facility; the design and concept and it’s achievable in six months.

“Every data centre manager knows there must be governance at the trigger points of expansion. We currently have 255 racks capacity and within six months we can double including the power expansion. In this very location we can expand to 3000 racks generating about 9megawatts of IT power.

“In the whole site we will be able to generate about 12megawatts. So, we already have the blueprint on how we will expand”, the MD said.
