Mr John Egesi, President, Nigerian Shipper`s Institute, on Saturday urged the Federal Government to strengthen maritime institutions to achieve required skills and expertise in the sector.

Egesigave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He said making maritime institutions stronger and better, especially the Maritime Academy, Oron , apart from increasing manpower, would impact positively on the industry.

He the establishment of more maritime institutions was unnecessary, adding that the country does not need many institutions to optimally develop the sector.

I have heard some people roll out statistics, trying to make a case for the creation of more institutions to produce more people for the sector.

But my own position is that we should not produce people just for the sake of it. We should produce personnel based on the needs of the sector.

How many vessels really come to Nigeria? And if we do not have many vessels, why do we need to build more institutions and turn out more maritime workers when the industry can’t absorb them?

Are we producing people for exports? I think what is needed is for government to boost the capacities of existing institutions to produce improved skills and expertise for the industry”, he said.

Egesi said the core maritime countries like England, Norway and Sweden do not have many maritime institutions yet they ranked among the most developed maritime countries in the world.

Nevertheless, he lauded the establishment of the Maritime University, Warri Delta State.

The institution will boost the development of the maritime sector if equipped with all the essentials.’’ (NAN)
