The Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has recovered over N10 million from fake staff of the board.

The chairman of the board, Prof. Matthew Sule, who made this known, added that N10 million was discovered in four local government areas of the state.

According to Sule, the board constituted four audit teams to assess teachers’ salaries in Mangu, Wase, Jos North and Kanam local governments.

He said that the audit report revealed that 114 officials alleged to be staff of the board are fake adding that the board was worried about rising wage bills coming from teachers’ salaries, which did not respect accountability and transparency.

“We decided to go to these four local governments and carried out tests and we discovered that in Wase local government, 33 staff on the payroll were either fake or the names were duplicated and in Mangu 51 and Jos North 11, Kanam19 which gives a total of 114.

“And there was even a particular case in Jos North where a woman took up another appointment somewhere and appointed another person on her own and the salary has been drawn monthly for more than one year,” Sule added.

He said that the board has stopped the payment of salaries to the said accounts.

“So, we have decided to stop the salaries of such staffers and by this, we have saved N10,839,999.95. This money has been saved and we will continue to purge the system of these unwarranted individuals so that we have teaching population that is realistic in public schools. Some of them absconded and they claimed that they went to school but without approval,” he stated.

Sule added that the exercise would not just stop with the four pilot local governments so far axed, but that it will be carried out in all the 17 local government areas.
