MOSES understood the obstalces the Israelites faced when they left Egypt, because the Israelites spent 40 years on a journey that should have lasted 11 days (Numbers 13 & 14). The cause of their wilderness wandering wasnít distance that stood between them and the Promised Land. Rather, it was as result of the condition of their hearts. The purpose of God for this special people transcended delivearnce from slavery and just settling them on their new land. However, he wanted a people for himself, who he will prepare to live in obedience to him once they arrived in the Promised Land.

This is because the original nations whose land they were going to ocuppied were wicked, rebellion and idol worshippers. That means God would be wicked and unrighteous to bring another set of people without sound religious identity, whose national character is not distinguished by the fear of their God. Although, the journey was painful and full of unexpected difficulties, it was necessary as part of their preparation. God also use this period to teach them valuable lesson such as who he was: the living God, the Leader of their nation. He also taught them who they were: people who were fallen, sinful, prone to rebellion and doubt. So, he gave this rebellious people the law to help them understand how to relate to God and other people. Applying this to our individual lives our spiritual pilgrimage may be lengthy, and we may sometime face pain, discouragement, and difficulties. We are to always remember that God does not just want us to be alive. He wants to prepare us tthrough those challenges to learn to live in service and devotion to him.

Be careful to obey all the commands I am giving you today. Then you will live and multiply, and you will enter and occupy the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors. Remember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness for forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would really obey his commands … So you should realize that just as a parent disciplines a child, the Lord your God disciplines you to help you,î Deut. 8:1-5.

God is ever interested in fulfilling all his promises to us. He is indeed a covenant keeping Father. The question is have you been tested and proved worthy? What will be your attitude to the things of God when you are living in comfort?

Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them . . . whither ye go to possess itî-Deut. 6:1. As for the Israelites, a full provision was made for them in Godís commands to live by and even inculcate them on the minds of the young by a system of parental training.

God knew that there were tendecny for his people to derailed hence he gave them the antedote-His Word. How often do you study Godís word and obey it?
