Academy pledges to address mathematical challenges among pupils

To effectively address the difficulties associated with the teaching and learning of mathematics among pupils, Sociable Intellectual Progressive (SIP) Academy, has launched Abacus and SIP Brain Gym learning solution in Lagos.

Founder of the Global SIP Academy, Kelvin Tham, observed that mathematics is still the greatest problem confronting many students in schools as the number of students that dread the subject is still high.

He explained that the programme was developed to help students overcome fear of the subject and improve their skills and learning capabilities in Arithmetic for national development.

“I noticed that most children all over the world have fear for numbers and this make them feel that mathematics is too abstract and difficult to learn. The SIP Academy programme will take the children through a step-to-step learning procedure such that they begin to love mathematics and overcome the fear for numbers.

Tham noted that SIP academy programme worldwide are notable for speed writing, character formation, team work, international network, proficiency, curriculum based syllabus, regional and national competition, as well as brain gym exercise. He urged school managers in the country to adopt and adapt the exercise owing to its numerous benefits in teaching and learning.

A professor from Lagos State University, (LASU) Ayo Omotayo, in his keynote address disclosed that less than 30 per cent of students who write mathematics exams internationally pass, and this has continued to be a challenge for the country.

He said, “We must now grab this opportunity and make a difference in the lives of our children. To train rocket scientists in Nigeria, they must know mathematics. This is therefore a time for change and we are happy with this development.”

Managing Director, EduCraft, Napoleon Omiunu, said SIP Academy is a franchise from Malaysia and offers a full package of Abacus programme ranging from providing the programme, the materials, the teachers, the examination and the certificates.

He said the programme, which is targeting over 350 schools in Lagos State and will soon launch in other states in the country.
