The Ondo State government has engaged the Federal College of Agriculture, Akure (FECA) for the training of 18,000 youths on egg production and value chain opportunities. This was made public in Akure by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who stated that 1,000 youths would be selected from each of the 18 council areas of the state.

The Provost of the college, Dr. Samson Adeola Odedina, expressed delight that stakeholders in agriculture have begun to realise that those people given loans and grants for agricultural investments need training.

He conducted the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh, round the college facilities and International Training and Conference Centre to ascertain the FECA’s readiness to key into the National Egg Production (NEGPRO) scheme.

According to him, “We have identified poultry as a very profitable value chain opportunity; and we have been doing it. Each year we receive funds from Federal Ministry of Agriculture to train young people in bird stocks and sustainable egg production.”

Odedina, whose college initiated the value chain curriculum and is the leading agric training institution in the nation, disclosed that participants have begun registration either on the college’s websites or by visiting the agroshop.

“We train people in batches, and for a batch, we can handle one or two thousand. In the two weeks training, we focus on sustainable egg production, marketing and access to import.

“These are what we have been doing and we are very happy that Ondo State is partnering us to train young people to continue to make money through this very profitable agricultural value chain opportunity.”

The provost, who initiated value chain opportunities in biofortified Vitamin A maize and cassava in Nigeria, announced that “The first training comes up in the third week of February and the registration is throughout the year.”
