Canvassing policy marketing as key to harnessing human, natural resources
President, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, (NIPR), Dr. Rotimi Oladele, has said there must be emphasis on policy marketing if the country is to harness its human and natural resources for development.
Oladele made the declaration recently at the Brand Campaign magazine’s 5th anniversary lecture in Lagos, when he said successive Nigerian governments did not put in place the right policies. He spoke on ‘Leadership, Policy Marketing and Repositioning of the Nigerian Nation,’ Oladele said Nigeria is a fertile ground for unbaked and disorganised policy, such that nobody could effectively lay hands on them for business planning and execution.
“The issue of policy marketing is totally neglected as far as policy is concerned,” he said.
He likened the national policy to a well fenced garden to prevent intruders from harvesting to buttress how and why national policies should be nurtured and guarded to produce good treasures for development, noting that if the garden is not protected, there would be all manner of intruders.
“Good policies ensure that manufacturing companies are located at the source of raw materials, and even the locations of strategic agencies are where they will be optimally effective.”
He, therefore, charged leaders to rethink the nation’s policies with the followers having changed mindsets. Oladele stressed that service should be an expectation of the followers. “Service not made out of the expectation of the followers is wasted. That is what always happens in Nigeria’s situation. If there is no feedback from the followers then the leadership cannot be true and original.
“And if you look at the manifestos of your political representatives, they are never a reflection of the needs of the people,” and alluded to the didactic theory of social relationships between the followers and the leaders as a reciprocal one.
One of the panelists and Managing Director of Brandish magazine, Mr. Ikem Okuhu, argued that Nigeria is yet to grasp the rudiments of leadership, which he said unfortunately manifests in virtually every facet of Nigerian life. He lamented that Nigerians had endured bad leadership for too long and urged them to rethink and have a change of heart towards building a better Nigeria.
