Coventry is celebrating 175 years of providing education in the city with a new round of scholarships to open up education to even more people.

Tracing its roots back to the opening of Coventry School of Design in 1843, the University has gone on to train thousands of professionals from across the world and invested in continued regeneration for the city and University campus.

It is now one of the UK’s largest universities, bringing around 30,000 students to the UK each year and hoping to help others reach their potential with a new round of International Academic Excellence Scholarships, available to exceptional postgraduate students.

Graduate, Adolphus Chukwunonso Duru who completed his Electrical and Electronics Engineering MSc at Coventry before gaining a full time job at the university, was awarded a scholarship – helping to make his whole experience possible.

The 26-year-old from Nigeria said: “I was awarded the High Achievers Award for Excellence in January 2017 and studying for my postgraduate course at Coventry was no brainer from there. It took away all the financial stress and helped me continue to study what I loved, engineering.

“Now I am able to fulfill my dreams of connecting people and continue living in Coventry which is a beautiful university in a very beautiful city. It has a very diverse community and despite being away from home for so long, due to the diversity of cultures in Coventry – I feel at home.”

Coventry University Vice-Chancellor, John Latham said:

“Our institution has changed names over the decades but we have always been an institution of the city for the city. We want everybody to join us in this celebration to mark our creation by industrialists and entrepreneurs, and celebrate how that spirit endures today.

“We are extremely proud of everything our students and staff have contributed and we are looking to do even more to give back and invest in Coventry for the next 175 years – through the UK City of Culture 2021 and beyond.”
