As part of efforts to boost the health of officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), medical doctors under the aegis of the Medical Guild, which is made up of doctors under the employment of the Lagos State Government, have screened and treated the officials for hypertension, diabetes and other various health conditions capable of causing sudden death. The treatment is a part of the doctors’ free medical outreach programme.

The event, which was declared opened by the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health Service Commission, Dr Jemilade Longe, had medical doctors from the Lagos State University Teaching (LASUTH) and general hospitals attending to the officials on medical issues.

The Medical Guild Chairman, Dr. Biyi Kufor, explained that the outreach was meant to forestall sudden death among the officials, adding that those in need of referral would be referred to teaching hospitals for urgent and specialised care.

“Our free medical outreach is specifically targeted at officials of LASTMA. As you may be aware, a short while ago, an official of LASTMA collapsed suddenly while at his duty post. He was brought in dead to Surulere General Hospital, Randle Avenue, and Surulere.

“That got us thinking that there are a number of people who are moving around with ailments that can be treated. But because they do not check their health status regularly, they carry these ailments around, and sometimes they can get into serious trouble, or worse still the same position the LASTMA official got into. We cannot deny the fact that LASTMA is a vital part of the workings of the Lagos State Government,” Kufor said.

LASTMA General Manager, Babatunde Edu, who was represented by the Assistant Director, Welfare Unit, Morayo Ojeniyi appreciated the doctors for the medical outreach.

Edu stated that the government, having realised the importance of health and the well being of its citizenry, has put in place a well-equipped medical facility with professional personnel to attend to the staff on regularly basis.
