Don tasks students on positive use of internet

A university teacher, Prof Akachi Ezeigbo has tasked parents and teachers to guide their wards on the need to put the internet to positive use.

Ezeigbo while giving her report of the national essay competition for Nigerian secondary schools at the 19th Mike Okonkwo annual lecture held at the Muson Centre, Lagos said students must be made to understand that there are regulations guiding the use of materials sourced from the internet.

She said, “Teachers and parents should pay more attention to how students use the internet in their schoolwork, as the internet and android phones have become basic infrastructures of knowledge production and transmission, our children must now be made to understand that there are regulations concerning to which they can claim materials domiciled in those spaces of learning.

“They need to be taught early enough how much they can extract from existing materials without infringing on copyright rules.”

Prof Ezeigbo recommended that rudimentary lesson on the rules of proper writing, how to acknowledge the materials consulted and the consequences of plagiarism should form part of the curriculum of senior secondary school.

Miss Onitilo Deborah of New Chrisfield College, Ikorodu, Lagos emerged the overall winner, with 63 per cent and 52 per cent in the first and second rounds of the competition.

Miss Ashley Davidson of Vivian Fowler Memorial College for Girls, Ikeja emerged the first runner up with 62% in the first round and 49% in the second round while Esigbone Omagbemi Ferdinand of Roshallom International Secondary School, Lagos came third. He scored 60% in the first round and 47% in the second round. The other winner is Miss Fagbemi Semilore Ireoluwa of Roshallom International School, Lagos.

For coming top in this year’s competition, Deborah received a cheque of N100, 000, a personal Laptop, trophy and plaque, while her school got three sets of computer and a printer.

Davidson who came second received a cheque of N75, 000; a plaque while her school received two sets of computer and a printer. For emerging the third position in this year’s competition, Ferdinand went home with a cheque of N50, 000 and a plaque while his school received a computer set.

Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition was initiated in year 2004, as part of activities to celebrate the birthday of the renowned cleric and Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) and more importantly, to contribute to the development of the educational sector.

In his lecture titled, “Nigeria’s unity: Matters arising,” eminent lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN) said Nigerians must support the government for the fight against corruption to succeed.

Besides, he said government must play its part by embarking on developmental projects that will positively impact lives.

The fiery lawyer said the ‘imperialist economic agenda of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressive Congress (APC) –led government which has accentuated poverty in the country must be abandoned.’

He said, “ Instead of handing over the country to market forces, government should control and regulate the economy in a way that our abundant resources are channeled towards addressing the crisis of underdevelopment. “

The senior advocate noted that the commitment of members of the political class to the unity of the country does not go beyond the allocation of resources and sharing of public posts.
