FECA launches planting of biofortified vitamin A cassava, maize in Ondo

The Federal College of Agriculture, Akure (FECA) has launched the 2016 planting season for bio-fortified crops, committing itself towards
youth empowerment in the country.

The Provost of the college, Dr Adeola Odedina said this at the weekend during the launching at the campus, themed: “Scaling out Biofortification Investment in Nigeria.”

According to him, “Today we gather here to celebrate or mark one of the fruits of our collaborative efforts to promote agriculture in Nigeria and to be more relevant to our immediate community.”

The institution launched a new season of planting 100 hectares of Vitamin A maize and cassava; and commissioned the model cassava processing centre, model points of sales (Agroshop) and model
restaurant.

The college Agroshop, Biofort Restaurant and Cassava Processing and Value Addition Centre were donated by HarvestPlus, an international donor organisation funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and DFID, UK and other global donors.

Odedina listed the achievements recorded so far, which included the
establishment of several agricultural communities in the state and training of numerous manpower, especially the youths for profitable ventures in the sector.

He revealed that “from September 2008 till date, the college has successfully trained and empowered over 7,500 categories of
entrepreneurs (youths, women, retirees etc) on profitable agribusiness.”

The Executive Secretary of Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), Prof B.Y. Abubakar, who was represented by Chief Edet Ekon, lauded the institution for the feats.

“It is believed that a transformed ARCN of which FECA-Akure is part of, will contribute immensely to the attainment of the Federal Government’s goal of diversifying the economy through agriculture,” he said.

Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who was also represented by the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Pastor Segun Ayerin, expressed his commitment to support the institution on its programmes that are at par with the vision of his administration.

The Provost of the college, Odedina, Governor Mimiko were conferred
with meritorious award for their commitment to agricultural development in the nation by the Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN).
