OVER 14 million people learn they have cancer and eight million die from the disease. Studies suggest that one-third of cancer death can be prevented, but occasionally, services and technologies are not usually available, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

Figures from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) show that about 715,000 new cancer cases and 542,000 cancer deaths occurred in 2008 in Africa.

These numbers are expected to double (1.28 million new cancer cases and 970,000 cancer deaths) by 2030. This, the body says, is due to the aging and growth of the population, with the possibility of going higher due to the adoption of behaviors and lifestyles related with economic development, such as smoking, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity.

IARC describes cancer as an emerging public health problem in Africa.

Early last month, several organizations and government agencies around the world called attention to the need for a more practical approach to the fight against cancer, highlighting solutions that are within reach.

The US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes cancer as disease in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues.

“Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. Cancer is not just one disease, but many diseases,” the Centre says.

The African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) stressed the need for reliable information on cancer as a major cause of disease morbidity and mortality in Africa.

The organization said: “It is also possible that cancers are not as well ascertained in Africa as in other parts of the world. High-quality, population-based cancer registries are not as commonly available in Africa as elsewhere, and this report highlights the need for expansion of cancer registry programs in Africa for better understanding of the cancer burden and control planning. We have reached an important junction with regard to cancer activities in Africa.

A study by the CDC shows that cancer could be prevented through regular screening and medical care, avoiding tobacco and limiting intake of alcohol.

It says: “The number of new cancer cases can be reduced, and many cancer deaths can be prevented. Research shows that screening for cervical and colorectal cancers as recommended, helps prevent these diseases by finding precancerous lesions so they can be treated before they become cancerous. Screening for cervical, colorectal, and breast cancers also helps detecting these diseases at an early, often highly treatable stage.

“Vaccines also help reduce cancer risk. The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine helps prevent most cervical cancers and some vaginal and vulvar cancers, while the hepatitis B vaccine can help reduce liver cancer risk. Making cancer screening, information, and referral services available and accessible to all can reduce cancer incidence and deaths.

“ A person’s cancer risk can be reduced in other ways by receiving regular medical care, avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol use, avoiding excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun and tanning beds, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, maintaining a healthy weight, and being physically active.”

To relief the pain of cancer patients, a cancer pain management drug, Vidatox 30 CH, has been introduced into Nigeria.

Director General, NAFDAC, Dr. Paul  Orhii,  who spoke at the introduction of the drug in Abuja, recently, acknowledged the effectiveness of the drug, while confirming that it has been registered with the agency.

He said the drug could help alleviate pains associated with cancer.

Orhii said:  “The introduction of ‘Vidatox 30 CH’ is an adjuvant in the management of cancer pain. It is, therefore, a welcome development. Particularly it is aimed at relieving pain and improving the quality of life of cancer patients.

“It is a novel homeopathic biotherapeutic product for cancer pain management and Vidatox 30 CH has been registered by NAFDAC, the registration number for the product is A7-1623L.”

He stated further: “Homeopathy is an age long medical philosophy and practice that is based on the idea that the body has the ability to heal itself. It views symptoms of illness as normal responses of the body as its attempts to regain health.”

The drug was introduced by Cuban firm, Labiofam Grupo Empresarial.

A factsheet from the firm showed that: “The Homeopathic biotherapic, whose active principle is the venom from the scorpion Rhopalurus junceus, and an endemic Cuban species.

“This homeopathic medication has improved the quality of life and survival of cancer patients, providing pain relief in addition to improving their symptoms.

The use of Vidatox 30CH prevents the undesirable symptoms produced by the cytostatic drugs and ionizing radiations to which cancer patients are usually subjected.

“The venom from the Cuban scorpion Rhopalurus junceus has been shown to have antitumoral and antimetastatic activity on solid tumors. It, therefore, represents a potential therapeutic alternative for the treatment of neoplastic disease in humans.”

“ It is a potentially non-toxic product that is taken orally. Its use does not exclude or limits other conventional measures of the oncological treatment. Its simultaneous use can indeed have a synergic or potentiate effect on the anti tumoral activity.

“The application of Vidatox® 30 CH in patients suffering from cancer in different organs and phases has improved the quality of life; improved symptoms; relived pain and prolonged survival.

An expert in the cancer research and management, Dr Olufemi Ladeinde, gave greater insight into some otherwise hardly talked about possible prone areas and behaviors.

His postulations are a paradigm shift from the usual warnings about cancer.  His warning is that phones, television, beddings, clothing and many other items we use daily are harbingers of the dreaded ailment.

He also stated how cancer now affects people of all ages, and not only the elderly, as had been previously known.

Ladehinde said: “You are poisoned by the food you eat; the water you drink; sometimes by the cloth you wear; the bed you sleep in. How are you not going to get cancer in that environment? It is impossible. The beds you sleep in these days, all the beddings, the blanket, and the bed sheet are all supposed to be immersed in fire retardants.

“Fire retardants are concerted, but you sleep in the bed and you breathe in every night. For six to eight hours that you sleep every night, your mobile phone is close to you in your bed. Your flat screen is against the wall. You say it is switched off. You only use your remote control, but the red light is still on, and the waves are still coming. If you are sleeping on a bed that is made of springs, the springs in your bed become amplifiers.”

On the introduction of the cancer pain relieving drug, he said:  “ I have used this now for about six to eight patients and each time they use it, it has worked. The application of Vidatox 30 CH in patients suffering from cancer in different organs and phases has improved the quality of life; relieved pains and prolonged survival.”

He said about $200 billion was spent globally on cancer management adding that “You can’t detoxify. Your body does. For you to detoxify, you need to sleep. And you need to be asleep by half past ten. You know why? It is when you are sleeping that your body detoxify. It knows what to do. And the hormones that support you to do this are many. They call a board meeting when you are sleeping. The chairman of the board is melatholine.

“Melatholine is the hormone that puts you to sleep. Your body begins to produce it as soon as it is dark. It is automatic. It is natural. But production of melathone stops at midnight and takes off at 2am. So, if you are not in bed at 10:30, you know what will happen? Melatholine is not going to call a board meeting. If it doesn’t call a board meeting, detoxification is not going to happen. If detoxification doesn’t happen, you are dead. It is as simple as that.”
