Islamic scholar, Zuglul dies at 79

The entire Muslim folk was thrown into mourning yesterday when an erudite Islamic Scholar and founder of Daru Dawat Wal Irshad, Shaykh Mustapha Zuglul Sanusi was buried according to Islamic rites.

The entire Muslim folk was thrown into mourning yesterday when an erudite Islamic Scholar and founder of Daru Dawat Wal Irshad, Shaykh Mustapha Zuglul Sanusi was buried according to Islamic rites. Sheikh Zuglul, as fondly called, died after solatul Mogrub on Wednesday after a brief illness. He would have been 80years by 18th August.

The sudden death of the Ikirun born Scholar has certainly thrown the entire Muslim community in Nigeria and beyond into mourning, considering his immense contribution to the growth of Islam.

President, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Ishaq Akintola, said: “Shaykh Zughlool was a great Islamic scholar, an indefatigable preacher, a mentor primus inter pareil, a humanist par excellence and an exemplary leader nulli secundus.

“He was a great teacher and an outstanding researcher. He stands on the same pedestal as the late Shaykh Adam Al-Ilori. An incompatible team-player, he will be remembered for his great sense of humour, his unequalled power of delivery and his unparalleled eloquence. An exceedingly simple personality, his humility and generousity know no bounds,” he said.

Through its notable Arabic institution located in Isolo area of Lagos, Sheikh Zuglul has trained millions of notable Islamic scholars many of whom were making waves in the country today. He was a reputable historian in his own class. He was a student of the great scholar Sheikh Abdullah Adam Al Ilori.

Shaykh Zugulul was born on 18 August 1937. He received his early education and training under the tutelage of his father Mohammed Sanusi.At the age of 18, he enrolled at the Center for Arabic and Islamic Education popularly referred to as Markaz in Agege, Lagos, Nigeria under the patronage of the late Sheikh Adam Abdullah Al-ilori.

He travelled to Lebanon to further his studies. He visited some of the Islamic countries, including Egypt, Syria, Jerusalem, Jordan, Saudi Arabia in 1960s. He was granted a diplomatic leave in 1967.

In 1970, the late Shaykh founded the Daarul Dawah Wal Irshad in Mushin, Lagos and in 1971, he moved to his new headquarters in Isolo.He was the Director, Principal, Teacher at the Institute, also an expert on tafsir (Quranic exegesis), a historian per excellent, Preacher of repute well respected in the circle of Islamic and Arabic Scholars in the country.
