Conjunctivitis or Apollo is an infection that causes inflammation of the white part of the eye. It can also damage and inflame the inner eyelid. It makes the white part of the eye reddish or pinkish. Patients may experience constant urge to scratch the eye. But the suffering doesn’t end with just itchy eye, due to swelling; the patient may also be unable to open the eye after sleeping for a while. The infection can affect both eyes.

To tackle Apollo, eye doctors advised that eyes be frequently washed with clean water to reduce viral load in the eyes. After this, patients should see an eye doctor as soon as possible for proper eye test and treatments. They should also maintain a high level of hygiene, especially through frequent hand washing to prevent spread.

An eye doctor with Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Dr. Adetunji Adenekan said it is best to consult an eye doctor for eye screening.

He said: “Note that some eye drops, when used without prescription, can make Apollo worse and even cause blindness. Hence, unauthorised use of eye drop is dangerous to the eye. However, a balanced diet is vital for both the eyes and body in general. It is important that an eye doctor recommends and prescribes treatments for eye infections.

“People should make their eyes top priority. Self-medication on eye illnesses can lead to irreversible damage and blindness. So, consult your eye doctors for all eye illnesses.

“People who are in close proximity with a person suffering from conjunctivitis should take some precautions, such as not sharing the same towel with the person and washing hands regularly.

“Old people can suffer from Apollo, as their immune system is not as strong to fight it. If children are in close contact with persons having conjunctivitis, they can contract it. Therefore, teach them to wash their hands regularly and avoid contact with affected persons.

“People suffering from respiratory diseases may also get this infection, just like people suffering from diabetes. Others are people who take steroids, as well as people suffering from different transmitted diseases.”
