Medical expert urges regular screening for Hepatitis

A medical doctor, Dr Ahmed Mohammed, has called for regular screening for Hepatitis disease, stressing that it is only through examination that it can be diagnosed.

A medical doctor, Dr Ahmed Mohammed, has called for regular screening for Hepatitis disease, stressing that it is only through examination that it can be diagnosed.

He made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Katsina.

He said regular testing for the disease could assist to know one’s status.

Mohammed defined Hepatitis as inflammation of the liver and could easily lead to death of patient if untreated.

He also advised those with the condition to quickly get medical treatment and avoid self medication , noting that Hepatitis was a highly contagious disease with three categories designated as Hepatitis A, B and C.

The doctor said the disease could be contacted through blood transfusion, sexual intercourse or through exchange of saliva during kissing or using same eating utensils.

He added that “people with Hepatitis should get treatment from qualified medical personnel in standard hospitals to avoid complications.

“Patients should also avoid using traditional medicine to treat the disease as it can further worsen the situation of the patient.”

Mohammed urged Non-Governmental Organisations to embark on aggressive enlightenment campaign to
educate Nigerians on the dangers of Hepatitis.

Hepatitis is also hazardous to medical personnel if they came into direct contact with blood of the patients.
