Sokoto to create blood units in hospitals
As part of efforts to reduce maternal and child-related sicknesses and deaths in Sokoto State, plans are underway by the state government to establish emergency blood units for obstetrics patients in hospitals throughout the state.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Balarabe Kakale, who spoke at the opening of the Project Implementation Planning Workshop for Strengthening Health Outcomes for Women and Children (SHOW) in the state, said that there was also plan by the state government to establish emergency response units on all the major highways.
According to him, these units would render emergency care to accident victims and provide them free medical treatment for the first twenty-four hours.
The four-year Maternal Neonatal Child Health (MNCH) project, which is being funded by the International development agency of the Canadian government, Global Affairs, Canada,T is to be implemented by Plan International Nigeria which has already secured approval to this end.
The Country Director of Plan International Nigeria, Dr. Hussaini Abdu, said that his organisation was a development outfit striving to significantly contribute to the realisation of children’s rights.
He said that the organisation was currently working in Sokoto and several other states in the federation “to deliver innovative community interventions that empower individual and communities, and lead to improved MNCH service delivery and healthy outcomes for women and children”.
