IN keeping with the tradition of the church, which is in tandem with God’s word, every December, the presiding Bishop of Mercy Tabernacle, Bishop Jefferson Bankole, distributes foodstuff such as rice, beans, clothing materials, shoes and groundnut oil to the poor and less privileged in the community, where his church is located in Ogba, Ikeja.

Speaking to The Guardian on why he is motivated to do this, Bankole said: Help From Above is to us the mandate to feed the poor, the needy and the less privileged in the society. It was a vision God gave us one Christmas day 20 years back. Then, I was hungry and had no food and as I was waiting on the Lord, suddenly, a young pastor and neighbour brought cooked rice, which he sent to me through his help. On the way to my house, however, the help had tampered with the meat in it. But because I was so hungry, I had to eat the food and afterwards prayed to God. As I bowed down to pray and thank God for the provision, l heard a voice and God said: “l made you go through this hunger, feel the pain of the hungry on the street and for this, you are receiving a new order right now.”

“I asked Him, ‘how can a poor man feed poor people? God told me He would provide and l should just obey His word. I prayed on that vision and the following year, we started with half bag of rice and today, we have thousands of people coming here to take food as God is prospering us.

“By the grace of God, we have people that have been touched to support this cause with whatever they have such as shoes, clothing materials and computer among others; anything that can put smiles on the faces of the less privileged. What we do here cuts across religions. It matters not that you are Muslim, Christian or you don’t even go to church at all. We give everything out to the public without minding their creed.”
