There was confusion at the General Hospital, Calabar as major operations for free eye patients were suspended for lack of diesel and public power supply.

Over 40 patients stranded patients were seen sitting on benches and some on the floor at the hospital premises lamenting the poor treatment from the hospital management in the running of the special eye operation carried out by Mission for Vision Eye Clinic sponsored by Tulsi Chanri Foundation in collaboration with cross river government for South South and South East

One of the patients, Dr. Ken Wobo from Rivers state said, “I came here for cataract operation and since on Sunday I have been in Calabar the Canaan city we used to know in those days but my experience this time around is not good enough in the sense that we had prepared for operation scheduled today but at the time of operation, we were disappointed that the hospital administration is lacking in logistics and there is no diesel to put the generator on for operation to start. The white man was not happy and people offered to buy diesel but they refused saying they are Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) attached here and wont accept such an offer”.

Wobo who is a lecturer and politician said, “There are many people who came from Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia and all corners of South South and South East but we were all disappointed. Some people have stayed here for two weeks, some three weeks and we are disappointed and it does not speak well of the state government in terms of administration. So many patients got annoyed wondering why a whole hospital will not have diesel.”

On how he manages, he said, “I have been sleeping in the hotel spending N10, 000 a day because I cannot go back and I will continue sleeping until I get what I want and its unfortunate that this kind of incident they said has been occurring like that and the government should look at what is causing the problem and see what they can do to alleviate the situation. Feeding with my driver is cumbersome which ordinarily should not be like that.”
