LASU signs MoU to train students on entrepreneurship
The Lagos State University (LASU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with five leading firms to train student’s in entrepreneurial skills. The meeting took place at the instance of the Centre for Entrepreneurship Studies (CES) of the institution. The five organisations, namely Victor Eriabie & Associates; Aries Systemscom Technical Engineering Ltd, ShelterCare Partners Ltd (Building Logistics), Westgate Resources Development Centre (Human Resource Development), El-Zade Security and Technical Ltd (Security) were selected from a pool of other interested firms by the CES to partner with the university in giving practical training to LASU students who take the entrepreneurship course.
The vice chancellor, Prof Olanrewaju Fagboun explained that the partnership would give students the opportunity to acquire practical training from leaders in different industries at no cost, in what he described as another effort of the university management to give its students an edge over their contemporaries in the country.
Fagboun said, “What we are trying to achieve is a model that the National Universities Commission (NUC) will send people and say, let us copy the LASU model. When we talk about entrepreneurship, it is not just teaching them theory. It’s about giving them the practical. You should see this as wanting to make your profit and also recognising the social service involved. We want our students to work with you; we will not just foist them on you but they must be students who qualify on merit.
“We will make the process open for all of them to compete and the best chosen in every establishment, there are the good, the bad and the ugly. In LASU, we have the prevalence of the good, just believe in us.”
In their separate responses, the leaders of the partner firms expressed optimism over the success of the project, thanking the university for the opportunity and assuring that within the next one year, students of the institution would be the better for it.
The Registrar, while giving his vote of thanks urged the firms to hit the ground running and make the project one that all the partners can be proud of.
