Barely 36 days to the election, the Alliance for Democracy (AD), has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of sponsoring thugs to attack the supporters of its candidate, Mr. Olusola Oke.

The Director-General of Olusola Oke-Gani Dauda Campaign Organisation, Mr. Bola Ilori, alleged in a statement in Akure yesterday. The party urged the police and other security agencies to be proactive in protecting its members, before and during the election.

According to Ilori, the AD is a fast-growing political party in the state, which is sure of defeating both the ruling party and the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the election.

The statement read: “Our members have been attacked in Idanre, Ose, Ikare and Ondo by known thugs of the ruling party and their sympathisers in the state. We have uncovered that this plot would increase as the election approaches.”

The Director-General also alleged that the opponents were planning to use the media to disparage the image of its candidate. However, the PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr. Banji Okunomo, has refuted the allegation, saying it is a peace-loving party that abhors any act of violence.

Okunomo added that the AD had resorted to making false alarms like the APC to seek relevance in the media.“They are feeling threatened because of the popularity of the PDP in the state. We don’t breed thugs and we can’t attack them,” he said.
