AA’s candidate steps down for Oke

Leaders of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) have accused the presidency of intimidating its members ahead of Saturday’s polls.One of the party chieftains, Mr. Akindele Adeyi, told journalists in Akure that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was also part of the plot to repress the opposition.

According to him, the AD’s attention was “drawn to undemocratic and diversionary tactics employed by a cabal in the southwest, led by a former governor of Ekiti State and his Ogun state counterpart.”

He accused the APC leaders of plotting to destabilise the peace and communal cooperation in the state, by using security operatives to instigate political conflicts against them.

Adeyi disclosed that the AD had uncovered a ploy to use the Department of State Services (DSS) and other sister agencies “to arrest notable leaders of the AD.”

According to him, the Director General of the Olusola Oke Campaign Organisation was one of the major targets and warned against the consequence of such repression.

“The sad experience of the aftermath of the 1983 governorship election in the state brings to the fore the divisive and violent tendencies that the APC has planned,” he said.

He said the problems of the current administration were many and should not be increased.He cited insurgency, terrorism, militancy, kidnapping, infrastructure deficit and the baggage of unfulfilled electoral promises as some of them.

The AD leader appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to allow a level playing ground for free and fair polls.But the APC’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Abayomi Adesanya refuted the allegation.

He said the AD was merely seeking cheap popularity and sympathy from the Ondo people and the nation at large.Meanwhile, the candidate of the Action Congress (AA), Mr. Yinka Orokoto yesterday stepped down for Oke.

He told his supporters, at the grand finale of AD’s rally in Akure to vote for Oke.The AA’s National Secretary, Mr. Kenneth Eze, urged members of the AA to disregard the party’s logo and vote for the AD.
