Pro-Chancellor/Chairman, Governing Council, University of Ibadan (UI) Umar Musa Mustapha, has tasked the newly inaugurated chairman of the UI Advancement Centre, and former Chief of Air Staff (COAS), Gen. Abdul Rahaman Danbazzau, to use his name and other good attributes to lift the institution to the next level.

Mustapha who spoke while inaugurating the new board at the Senate Chamber of the institution, tasked members not only to maintain its standard, but, to move higher the ladder of greatness in the comity of higher institutions.

At the programme, which had in attendance members of university’s governing council and principal officers, including the Vice Chancellor, Isaac Adewole, his successor, Abel Olayinka, the registrar, Olujinmi Olukoya‎ among others, the Pro-chancellor said the board remained unshaken in its commitment to making the institution globally competitive and nationally relevant.

“The task of making the university globally competitive and nationally relevant is a joint effort of all and at the council level, we will give you all the necessary support while we will, from time to time, expect advice from the board towards achieving our goal of leaving the university better than we met it, whenever it is our time to leave the stage.”

In his opening remark, Adewole said the event was another transition programme taking place at the time he would be leaving the stage for his successor, a situation he said, was highly fulfilling for him.

He stated that the institution had carried out background checks on every member of the board and that they were all found worthy in character, charging them to use their good names to make friends for the institution.

He said, “Though the university needs money, we want you to make friends for us with your names. We cherish friends, we covet relationship because when we have good friends, doors will be opened and we will be able to go places.

“We will use your names, but‎ we want to assure you that it will be for the good of the institution and not for anything that will tarnish your image, it will be for something you will be proud of.

He continued, “We have done well as an institution, but, we cannot continue to live on past glory, we need to use the present to lay the foundation for the fut‎ure. The board will be free to conduct its own affairs without interference from the university’s management, no dictation from any quarters, and we shall fully support you,” the VC added.

In his remark, the new board chairman said that in addition to making friends for the university as requested by the VC, the board would also maintain the existing ones.

The former COAS, who holds Ph.D in Criminology and a visiting professor of Harvard University, acknowledged the calibre of other members of the board as people of high integrity, saying, “With the kind of mix on the board, we will do all that is possible to achieve success.

“We appreciate the independence of the board, but, I want to assure you that we will always consult because, two credible heads are better than one. It is better to consult to arrive at a good result and that will be our hallmark, team work is very important and profitable,” he added.
