As part of efforts to improve access to quality education for children in hard-to-reach slums in Nigeria, a non- governmental organisation, Slum2school has enrolled over 500 children in remote communities across the country.

The organisation also commissioned an Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) in Lagos State for children between nine and 24 years to learn entrepreneurial skills as part of efforts to boost the country’s economy.

Slum2school provides educational scholarships, create learning spaces and provide other psychological support for disadvantaged and vulnerable children in slums and indigent communities.

Speaking at the enrolment ceremony and commissioning of the EDC, Managing Director, Education Partnership Centre, Mrs Modupe Olateju emphasised on the importance of education in the country, which she identified as a benchmark for development.

She noted that Slum2school, which started in Makoko, has spread across 18 other communities across Nigeria including Borno State.

Olateju, who commended the government for supporting the vision of the organisation, however urged them to see education as a means to address the nation’s challenges.

She added that the only way the country could get itself out of the most poor people in the country is by giving quality education to all.

“Slum to school vision is to lift the country out of poverty, and this can only be done if the citizens have access to quality education. Every child has a right to good education and it is our believe that when the education system gets it right, the country will also get it right.”
