THE GLORIFICATION OF FACIAL PANCAKE

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment,… Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” — 1 Peter 3:3-4(NIV)

William Shakespeare in one of his legendary plays, Hamlet, said, “God has given you one face, and you make yourself another.” So many times, people are beautiful, not in looks but just in the way they are! Fredrick Douglas said, “I prefer to be true to myself even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and incur my own abhorrence” I want to emphatically say that using make-up is great but our impulsive obsession of it is robbing us of our ability to spend quality time on the things that truly matters. Let us spend more time looking into God’s word this year than looking into our make-up mirror. Leo Tolstoy said “Nothing is so necessary for a young man as the company of intelligent women.” Men are fans of natural beauty and an overdose of make-up will ultimately put people off around you.
“To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.” –Thich Nhat Hanh.

I advised last week that we should be more creative and not abusive with make-ups, we should strive to have healthy aesthetic standards, don’t defraud your natural beauty with too much make-up. By being your authentic self, you will attract people that are authentic and real, most times ladies lament on their ill-luck of attracting fake and unpleasant people while the major reason for their predicament is simply that they themselves are unreal! We must first deepen our relationship within ourselves before we get preoccupied with how we look in make-up. By building a life and lifestyle around our values, we create a life that is more satisfying, meaningful and fulfilling. The best self-image is not ‘facial’, it is the one that is internally motivated!

We thank God for the first part of ‘Some People Wake up Only To Make-Up’, the feedbacks have been so inspiring and I have decided to bring up just few of them! Please, note that your comments were not deliberately excluded if not published.

“Gbenga your article was really reflective. It made me think about the reasons we actually are here for. It could be perceived literally but also metaphorically, as so many of us wear masks that supposed to protect us from the outside world, but in all fairness we deprive ourselves from the experience of authenticity and the real selves. Very well written and with a deep notion!”- Agatha Penney(UK)

“Much and sufficient words have been written on this matter, but I will simply want to add this: let no lady be afraid of what she would look like or how she would be addressed when she presents her natural face. To my wife, stay natural, but surprise me once in a while with an artistic rendering of your face. I didn’t marry make-up, I married you!”-Dr Sho(#Old rugged), Microbiology Department, U.I .

“This is so true! I would rather add value and rest well at night than wake up early to save hours just to make up. For now, I only make up on special occasions but soon, the working class life will make me use daily but it would be light. Thanks so much for this! by the way, i love Chimamanda’s natural hair! #teamnatural..”-Gbemisola Olaosebikan(Youth Corper from Lagos)

“It is appalling the hours of manpower and cost spent on make-up, Mr. Adebambo has advised that a shift in focus be made and if this is adhered to, the impact on the society not just on the lady’s life. In as much as make-up are not to be completely done away with. Thank you for your inspiring write-ups on the Nigerian youths, you are indeed a great asset to this nation!”
-Mr. Samuel Umoru(Benin, Edo State)

“I must confess, no words could be truer than mentioned in the write up. A real wake up call to females with well-articulated facts. It is indeed inspiring, motivating, and challenging.”-Oluwasola A. Olabiyi(PortHarcourt)

“Truth be told, am not the make-up type except the need arises, which definitely has to be modelling, friends around me waste time on brows alone, which I consider a time waster, well I hope females read from this piece and be a time manager.’-Tosin Akinola(FUTA, Akure)

“It is true that making-up has become an obsession among women, young and old today. Unfortunately, it is a real struggle to keep from falling! Media and popular culture are not helping matters. I encourage women to take the courageous step to believe that they are indeed beautiful and to focus energy on enhancing that beauty both inside and outside. Give your potential expression”-Taiwo Farai(Ibadan)

“I feel achievers are women (ladies) who do not actually rely on artificial beauty, rather they do rely on intellectual beauty. What a nice article.”- Debo Oluwasegun(Osun State)

“I believe so much in natural beauty but it’s sympathetic to know that the idea of artificial beauty is the thing in vogue nowadays. We are living in a world where being natural is no longer fashionable, what a loss!”-Mrs. Okanlawon F.O(Oyo State Local government staff pension board, Secretariat, Ibadan)

“There is more to life than good looks and charm. While it is alright to pay attention to our physical appearance, it is not reasonable to do that at the expense of developing virtues and character (i.e inner beauty) which are what we really need to have a successful and impactful life. Good looks, pretty face, charm might attract people to us, make them give us the second and third look but VIRTUE and CHARACTER will keep the right people around us. So it’s not okay to wake up ONLY to make-up, but we should wake up to grow up.”-Olajumoke Obajimi(Ogun State)

“The greatest form of comfort is ‘simplicity’, I was amazed to realise that an obsessive use of make-up could averagely take seven years out of our productive life, this is an eye opener! I will be so much disciplined this year on the length of time I will be spending on make-up. You write-ups are awesome!”-Deaconess Funke Oladebo(CEO of Passion Designers, Ibadan)

“Make-up is meant to complement and not manipulate your beauty. Total beauty is beyond facial beauty, it is a thing of the mind. Many make-ups contain chemicals that are inimical to the skin and make you look older with continuous use. Using make up at an early age causes some consequences later in the future”-Olujimi Folakemi(Lagos)

“A lot of girls have to stack layers of make-up on their faces to feel pretty and beautiful; but true beauty is intrinsic- it depends purely on what she has on the inside. Outward beauty fades but inner beauty never dies”-Mercy Onwuteaka (Anambra)
“Don’t change so people will like you. Be yourself and the right people will love the real you.”-Anonymous

Roberts Liardon said, “An internal security will always produce an outward stability”, stop depending on your facial worth in order to get people’s acceptance, be secured from within, and put more effort into building your self-esteem and stop spending too much time on things that are ephemeral and transient. I am advising the Nigerian youths to be more comfortable in their own skin this year, real beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself. Let your core beauty value this year be ‘SIMPLICITY’ and allow your skin to ‘breathe’ more in 2016, aspire to be a model of unadulterated and pure beauty. The most exhaustive thing in life is trying to look like others, be yourself and be real. Your time is limited; don’t waste it trying to look like someone else. Let us prove Oscar Wilde wrong in one of his famous and controversial quote, “A man’s face is his autobiography. A woman’s face is her work of fiction.” This is 2016, don’t just wake up only to make-up, be fired up to be a better you; make-up in such a way to inspire others so that your face will not expire! I dedicate this piece to the only woman that has inspired me with her flawless, natural and exquisite beauty- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie! On behalf of the Nigerian youths we want you to know that you’ve been a great source of inspiration.

“In the age of the individual’s liquidation, the question of individuality must be raised anew.” – Theodor Adorno
