A five-day training on the management of the Endoscopy machine has commenced at the Enugu State university of Science and Technology, ESUT Parklane Hospital, Enugu.

The purpose was to educate hospital personnel on the proper use of the Endoscopy machine in the training of medical students and in the diagnosis of patients.

The endoscopy training was handled by two German –based experts, Dr. Alanna Ebigbo and Michael Schlander.

Declaring the training open, the provost of the ESUT college of Medicine, Prof. Anthony Ugochukwu, re-affirmed the commitment of the hospital to collaborate with the German medical team to advance learning and fully develop the Endoscopy unit at the college.

Ugochukwu, who was full of excitement on the landmark event, said the college of medicine would come up with a programme to make the training a regular feature, adding that the visit of Dr. Alanna Ebigbo and his partner from Germany, would further boost medical education, especially in the area of endoscopy.

According to him, “since we acquired the Endoscopy machine with the support of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFUND, I have been thinking of sending some staff to China, India, USA to study the use and management of the machine, so your visit is indeed a great relief to us, because the machine would be very useful for both students and consultants as well as patients, we wish you will come again and even bring more machines for us.”

He continued: “With your assistance, We hope to go from stage one to stage three, let us explore possibilities of getting support from Germany, in fact, am thrilled with your presence, and please we would need more equipment to solidify the endoscopy unit.”

Responding, the leader of the team, Dr. Alanna Ebigbo, said they came to see how to establish Endoscopy unit at the ESUT Parklane Hospital to boost healthcare in the area.

Alanna, explained that during his visit, he would train hospital personnel on the use of the endoscopy machine and carry out various diagnosis on patients.

He expressed happiness that some of the staff, Dr. Levi Ayogu and Dr. Chukwudi Iloh have already mastered the use of the machine and promised to come again anytime he was needed.

The medical expert said that he was motivated to embark on the training at Parklane because he always said no, each time he was asked if endoscopy machines were in use in Nigeria. Before moving to Germany to study medicine, Dr. Alanna Ebigbo, attended the federal government college, Enugu.

In his remarks, the training coordinator, Dr. Ugochukwu Ezenyirioha, said that the training was very important not only to Parklane, hospital but also to Enugu State, as the people needed endoscopy services, but could not have easy access to it because of its high cost.

Ezenyirioha, stated that the German medical team had come to train their staff on the use of the endoscopy machine, so that when they go back “we continue from where they stopped.”

He explained that basic endoscopy has to do with diagnostic and Therapeutic functions, stressing that it would be useful to students and consultants in internal medicine and general surgery.

The training coordinator further explained that the endoscopy machine was designed to treat and diagnose various gastro intestinal illnesses namely: peptic alcer disease, oesophageal varicies and cancers and others. Ezenyirioha also thanked the provost for his warm reception, saying that with the enthusiasm shown by the erudite professor, the project would be a success.

The team had earlier on arrival, paid a courtesy visit to the chief medical director of the ESUT Parklane Hospital, Enugu, Dr. Gabriel Njeze in his office.
