UNILAG names multipurpose hall after ex-VC, Jelili Omotola
In recognition of his outstanding achievements while in the services of the institution, authorities of University of Lagos (UNILAG), have named the institution’s 5, 000 capacity multipurpose auditorium after its former vice chancellor, Prof Jelili Omotola (SAN).
Incumbent vice chancellor of the school, Prof Rahmon Bello, told The Guardian, during the ceremony that “people that made the University of Lagos what it is today are now being recognised so that their names can be written down forever.”
Asked why it took this long before the institution deemed it fit to honour him, he responded: “It does not really matter how long it takes, what matters is that the Senate has lived up to its expectation and he is now recognised.”
Adekunle Omotola, the son of the late helmsman noted that, “this year makes it 11 years since my father died, and this is the first time a university is recognizing him. I also know that his legacy is not well situated, but today, I am fulfilled that the legacy has been recognised. We are very grateful to the university for renaming the multi-purpose hall, which he built after him. My father did a tremendous job in this university.
“In fact, in a letter the university authorities wrote to us, they acknowledged that he took the institution to the mega status level it is today. Since my father died, there have been numerous events for him so that his works will give expressions to the young ones that are coming up.”
