The Globacom-sponsored TV drama series, Professor Johnbull, this week treats yet another social challenge, the issue of matchmaking in Africa’s traditional marriage and its usefulness or otherwise in contemporary society.

According to Globacom, the age-long tradition where parents or relations arrange partners for their children or relations thought to be ripe for marriage but have refused to settle down subsists in modern times, prompting the series to examine the practice.

Can two complete strangers make good marriage partners? Is matchmaking old fashioned or still relevant in contemporary society? What is the place of compatibility in matchmaking? These are some of the questions the new episode entitled Arranged Marriage tries to answer.

In the episode, three of the characters, Mai Doya (Funky Mallam), Etuk (Imeh Bishop) and Olaniyi (Yomi Fash-Lanso), who are worried that Professor Johnbull (Kanayo O. Kanayo) is still single five years after he lost his wife, arrange to have the retired lecturer marry Etuk’s sister who resides in Abuja.

As that plot is being scripted, the mother of Abadnego (Martins Nebo), convinced that “a man who can grow beards is old enough to marry”, arranges a village girl for him and pays the bride price before bringing her to Enugu for Abadnego. Arranged Marriage reaches an intriguing climax when Etuk’s sister arrives Enugu to discover that Professor Johnbull is unaware of the marriage venture, while Abadnego rejects the village girl brought to her by his mother.

How does Professor Johnbull receive Etuk’s sister? Who arranges the exchange of gifts between Professor Johnbull and his arranged wife? Is Abednego’s mother’s assertion that “love comes to marriage when children begin to come in” valid?

Viewers will find out the answers to these questions when they tune in to the programme at 6.00 p.m. on Sunday on DSTV Africa Magic Family and GOTV Channel 2. The repeat broadcast comes up on Thursday at 9.30 p.m. and on NTA Network, NTA International on DSTV channel 251 and NTA on StarTimes at 8.30 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday. It is also aired on Anambra Broadcasting Service at 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday and Saturday.
