Igbo Art
The Igbo people have a wide variety of art including traditional figures, masks, artifacts, and works in metals such as bronze. Igbo artworks are believed to be dated from as early as the 9th century when the Igbo Ukwu bronze artifacts were first found. It is believed that the Igbo people are likely among the earliest groups of West Africans to employ the lost-wax casting techniques in the production of bronze sculptures.
Some of the popular art works associated with the Igbo culture are:
Igbo Ukwu
They are the oldest bronze artifacts known in West Africa and were manufactured centuries before the emergence of other known bronze producing centers such as those in Ife and Benin. The bronzes include numerous ritual vessels, pendants, crowns, breastplates, staff ornaments, swords, and fly-whisk handles.
Carved Doors
The Igbo people used carved wooden panels as doorways into the compounds of titled men and women. They were also found in the houses of the relatively wealthy as they used it to display their wealth and good taste.
Igbo Maiden Mask
Maiden mask art is often favored in red, orange, yellow and black pigments, as these colours best highlight the carvings. They’re mostly used during agricultural festivals, the dry season or during other ceremonies.
