‘One Dance’ Feature Makes Wizkid First Nigerian Artiste To Hit No.1 Spot on Billboard
Just like that, Nigeria’s very own Ayo ‘Wizkid’ Balogun becomes the first Nigerian artiste to reach the No.1 spot on the Billboard Top 100. And to think people are still giving him grief over his feature on ‘One Dance‘.
Initially, the first two singles off Drake’s Views album – ‘One Dance’ and ‘Pop Style’ – grabbed the top two spots on the Billboard + Twitter Trending 14 Chart, and even then One Dance was No.2 on the lineup. Since then, both songs have continued to do very well, gathering a lot of attention and downloads. All this reached a climax when Draked officially dropped the Views and broke the record for first-week streaming totals.
Admittedly, when I first heard Wizkid on One Dance, I was confused, disappointed, and then just indifferent all together. I still don’t feel any type of way about the song, but I can most certainly recognise how much of a huge deal this is. It may not have been the feature we were expecting from one of Nigeria’s top artistes, but it has catapulted him to a privileged spot no other Nigerian artiste can boast of.
“But it’s not even his song”, you say. Well, he featured on it and Billboard actually takes note of things like that. Drake has been in the No.1 spot has a featured artiste a number of times, but this is also his very first time hitting No.1 as a lead artiste. I can only imagine how proud Wizkid must feel right now being a part of something so great.
Once again, Wizkid has pulled the world’s attention to Nigerian music. Hopefully, our beloved performer is on his way to more amazing features that take him higher up the chart.
