With a career spanning over six decades, American actress and former fashion model will become the first black woman to receive the Honorary Award at the Oscars.

This was announced by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who revealed that come November 18, the 93-year old screen veteran will receive the prestigious honour.

According to People, she will be the first black woman ever to receive an Oscar in an honorary category at the upcoming Governors Awards.

Asides this landmark award, Tyson is the recipient of three Primetime Emmy Awards, four Black Reel Awards, one Tony Award and one Screen Actor Guild Award as well as a Presidential Medal of Freedom (which is the highest civilian honour in the United States) from the former president of the United States, Barack Obama.

She rose to prominence and critical acclaim for her performance as Rebecca Morgan in 1972 film, Sounder, for which she was nominated for both the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. Her role in the 1974 television film, “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” earned her further praise and awards which includes two Emmy Awards and a nomination for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

She has continued to stay relevant in film and on television in the 21st century as in 2011, she played the role of Constantine Jefferson in the award-winning 2011 drama film, “The Help” while also playing the role of Ophelia Harkness in American Broadcasting Company’s  legal drama, “How To Get Away With Murder” since the show’s inception in 2014. In 2015, she was named a Kennedy Center honoree.
