Sometimes, date night can be with your girlfriend and Backyard is the perfect place to have a quiet chit-chat. Located at 4b Musa Yaradua Street, Victoria Island, this restaurant has probably popped on your Instagram feed more than once with its signature swing and black wall.

Arriving at the restaurant late at night meant I could not enjoy the scenery I had been accustomed to on my Instagram page. So, I walked right in and met my friend, Deola, in a space so open that it almost felt like we were in a corner by ourselves.

Very much in tune with the vibe of the night, we were excited as we played with the illustrious menu. I ordered the Get A Head and my friend ordered the Quiet Storm.

Quiet Storm and Get A Head cocktails

Get A Head cocktail

My cocktail consisted of Sauvignon Blanc, vodka, fresh watermelon, Gomme syrup, fresh lemon juice and swoosh soda water. I did not enjoy the taste at first, but it tends to grow on you. The Quiet Storm had a sweet and sour taste and went down gently. The cocktail consisted of vodka, spiced rum, brown sugar, fresh lime and Lychee puree.

To eat, we had the steak sandwich which Deola recommended. It consisted of shredded marinated, grilled steak served on a baguette with grilled fresh mushrooms and peppers topped with mozzarella cheese. This meal was not as juicy as I expected it to be. It tasted really bland and I kept on wishing I had something creamy to complement the baguette and the steak.

It also didn’t go so well with the cocktail and this made eating a chore for me, but I had great company so I couldn’t complain. Maybe they had a bad day, or my choice of meal and drink did not complement each other.

Will I be going back to Backyard? Maybe! I’d make sure to go during the day and work on a better meal choice. Everyone deserves a second chance, right?
