For those who have lost weight or are trying to lose weight, they know how complex the weight loss journey can be. Most times, you never know what foods can trigger those extra pounds and totally throw off your entire plan for the week or month.

If you fall into this category, here are some food groups you should generally avoid.

  • Soda

Sodas contain a high fructose corn syrup content which can cause metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions– high blood sugar, increased blood pressure, excess body fat– which happen together and increases risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

  • Refined Carbohydrates

A high intake of refined carbohydrates causes a major surge in blood sugar which causes the pancreas to produce insulin at a faster rate to clear the sugar from your blood. This causes the body to work faster than it usually does, digesting and absorbing at a rate that could lead to a metabolic crash. Foods in this category include pasta, sweet and bread.

  • Artificial Sweeteners

Most people trying to lose weight tend to substitute sugar with artificial sweeteners to speed up the process. However, research has shown that this might have the opposite effect.  In a recent study, people who have a buildup of saccharine and sucralose from artificial sweeteners tend to develop glucose intolerance– a condition associated with obese people.
