Gartner, a research and advisory firm that gives information on IT related products, has reported a drop in the sales of smartphones for the first time since it started its analysis.

According to its analysis, Samsung saw a decline of 3.4 % in the last quarter in 2017 while Apple witnessed a drop of 5% in sales during the holiday quarter. It pointed out two main causes: lack of “ultra-low-cost” smartphones and users of expensive quality using their phones for a longer period.

“While demand for high quality, 4G connectivity and better camera features remained strong, high expectations and few incremental benefits during replacement weakened smartphone sales”, Anshul Gupta, a research director at Gartner said.

Meanwhile, Huawei recorded an 8.9% growth making it gain higher than Apple.

Gartner expects Samsung sales to improve in the first quarter of 2018 due to its Galaxy products and Apple, with its iPhone X.
