When I go shopping for new clothes and shoes, I don’t really mind spending a few minutes walking around the store looking for exactly what it is I want. However, I’m not one of those people who select like a hundred items and then head to the changing room to see which ones fit. I am of the opinion that this works for me because I have used a couple of sizing tricks for a signifficant amount of time and now I just know what will fit instinctively.

Why do you need sizing tricks?

You may not always be in a situation where it’s convenient for you to go into a changing room and try one of the clothes you want to buy. In the case of shoes, some stores don’t let you put your feet in the shoes you are interested in. These sizing tricks give you a sense of your body size, and help you know if something will fit without having to put it on.

Sizing Tricks That Will Save You Time

Size Yourself Up

Before you go shopping, it helps to size yourself up first. Find items you are going to buy, like blouses and jeans, and hold them up to your body in front of a mirror. Commit what they look like against your body to memory so you can do the same thing when you get to the store. If the waistline of your pair of jeans at home goes from one edge of your waist, then the one in the store should do the same.

Measure Shoes With Your Wrist and Elbow

Did you know the size of your foot is the length of your wrist to your elbow? If you don’t believe me, try it now. Place your arm next to your foot and line up your longest toe with your wrist. The bottom of your foot should be in line with your elbow. When you go shopping and you want to try on shoes, simply take the sole of the shoe and place it on your arm – the same way you did with your foot.

NOTE: For heels, I place the shoe on its side, instead of the sole. The length of the shoe is usually an accurate measure.

Wrap Waistbands Around Your Neck

Close the zipper of the pants or skirt you want to try on and button it, then wrap the waistband around your neck. If the waist band doesn’t overlap, then the pants are probably too small for you. If it overlaps about an inch, the pants fit. If it overlaps more than an inch, it’s too big. Of course, you could refer to the first point and size a pair of jeans you already own this way to know what you’re looking for when shopping. Of all the sizing tricks, I use this one the most.

Measure Your Inseam* With Your Arm

We’re full of fun facts today! Did you know the distance from the base of your neck to the tip of your fingers (on an outstretched arm) is about the same length as your inseam? This is another one you can try at home before you go to the store. Take a pair of pants you already own and measure the inseam with your arm so you know what size you’re looking for.

*an inseam is the inside leg of your pants.

Measure Hips With Your Shoulders

If you’re one of those people who struggle with getting pants that fit both the waist and hips, then this sizing trick is for you. Measure the widest part of the pants against the widest part of your shoulder. If your shoulders are wider than the pants, they are too small. If the pants are just a bit wider than your shoulders, it will probably fit well. If the pants are a lot wider than your shoulders, it’s too big.
