Breaking out is one skin issue a lot of people experience. Growing up, I never had any issues with acne; but that changed a year ago. I’ve learned that no matter how much you take care of your skin, you are still very prone to acne every now and then. One may ask what causes the skin to break out. There are many reasons, but I will name 6 common reasons why you keep breaking out.

‎Stress

Stress has a way of messing up your skin. ‎Stress causes hormonal imbalance making the oil glands to produce more sebum. More oil on the skin means more acne. So you have to try as much as possible to avoid stressing yourself physical and mentally.

Excessive Face Washing

Some people don’t know this, but it is possible to wash your face too much. Washing your face more than necessary will cause your skin to dry up. This will then make your body feel like it has to compensate by producing more oil. As much as possible, try to wash your face twice a day at most. And if you feel you have excessively oily skin, use wipes to clean your face instead of washing.

Dirty Pillow Cases

It’s possible your pillow case may be causing your acne and you may not even know it. Dirty or sweaty pillow cases breed germs which can settle on your skin when you lie on them. It’s also important to always wear a hair cover before lying on your pillow. You don’t want your hair products rubbing your pillowcases causing you more acne. It’s advisable to use a satin pillow case and change it every two days.

Irregular Exfoliation

Exfoliate, exfoliate and exfoliate! That’s one mantra I stick to. When you don’t exfoliate regularly, dead cells, dirt and product residue build up and clog the pores. When your pores are clogged, you start to breakout because your skin can’t breathe. This is why it’s necessary to exfoliate regularly. Develop the habit of using a good scrub on your face at least once a week. Scrubbing your face will reveal a glowing and spotless skin surface.

Diet

Because everything we digest is carried round our body through our circulatory system, the type of food you eat can influence the appearance of your skin. So if you’re eating a lot of junk food, there’s a great chance that this habit contributes to your skin breaking out. Also, pay attention to what you are eating as people’s bodies react differently to different food items. I always advocate healthy eating habits, limited in fats and oils.

Alcoholic Cleanser

Personally, I really don’t like the alcoholic smell of most cleansers and toners. Using cleansers and toners that contain alcohol tends to dry up the ‎skin. As I said earlier, dry skin forces your body/skin to produce more oil which in turn makes your skin breakout. Try using an alcohol free cleanser or toner on your face.
