Contrary to what you may think, lip balms are super easy to make and you can customise them to suit your tastes, whether you like your lip balms sweet and flowery or minty and soothing.

The basics of making lip balms are quite simple: you need a fat (vegetable-based butter or oil) and a wax. All other ingredients like flavouring agents and essential oils are optional. But be wary of these ingredients when making or buying lip balms.

What you’ll need

  • Oils or butters
  • Wax (beeswax or carnauba wax)
  • Essential oil you love (optional)
  • A small pot and a large pot for melting and mixing
  • A whisk or spoon to stir
  • Glass droppers or a spoon
  • Pots or tubes for your lip balm of awesomeness

Directions

    1. Grate or chop your wax finely and scoop into your smaller pot or a stainless bowl with your butters and oils, except the lemon oil.
    2. Heat about 2 inches of water in a larger pot and place the smaller pot with your ingredients into it. Make sure the water doesn’t spill into the smaller pot. Reduce the water if it might.
    3. Keep the water on medium-high heat until the wax and oil has melted, stirring until it dissolves.
    4. Once melted, remove from the heat, set aside and add your favourite essential oil.
    5. Use your dropper to transfer the liquid balm into your empty containers. Leave to cool for about 10 hours before you close.
    6. Add cute labels and voila!

Well done!
