Yagazie And Akweke Emezi Feature In Vogue Magazine
For the February 2018 issue of Vogue magazine which has Serena Williams on the cover, also features two Nigerian sisters Akweke and Yagazie Emezi.
The picture was shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz who, for Vogue, did a series on families around the world.
Akweke Emezi, the older of the sisters, released her debut novel Freshwater recently which follows the journey of Ada, a complicated character based on Akweke’s realities, she is a recipient of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Farafina Writing Workshop and her short story Who is Like God won the Commonwealth Writers Competition African region.
When it comes to the way they view the world, Akweke said this to Vogue: “There’s this reality that’s considered mainstream, where beauty looks like X, we’re stepping outside that reality, and we’re saying we’re not going to move.”’
Yagazie, who had actually appeared on a previous cover of Guardian Life, is a documentary photographer. She spends her time travelling and capturing the stories of people around the world. For her series for Vogue, she travelled to Liberia telling stories through her pictures, of diverse beauties and personalities.
