About 282 professors on contract at the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, have asked Governor Nysom Wike to pay them their two-year salary arrears.

Among them are other academic and technical workers.

The group’s coordinator, Prof. Sony Amadi, told journalists yesterday in Port Harcourt that they had exhausted all appeals to the relevant authorities to address the situation.

According to him, some of them are being owed between eight and 23 months.

Amadi said the governor paid them three and half months in 2017, which raised the hope that the balance would be paid.

He explained that the non-payment was caused by the new policy of central salary payment, which the state government adopted a few years ago.

Under the system, salary budget for the university was removed from them and transferred to the government.

Meanwhile, Governor Rauf Aregbesola has commenced the payment of pensions to some pensioners.

The governor released N1.2billion to settle the entitlements of those who retired from the civil service from 2012 to 2013.

The Head of Service, Ologboyega Oyebade, gave the cheques to the pensioners and other government officials at the state Secretariat, Abere.
