Senator Barnabas Gemade

One of the founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Barnabas Gemade has announced his defection from the party to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) despite having picked PDP’s Benue North East senatorial nomination form.

Gemade who was formerly a National Chairman of the PDP said he exited the party because Benue State governor Samuel Ortom betrayed him over Benue North East senatorial ticket.

The senator, who is currently representing Benue North East Senatorial District in the Senate, had in July defected to the PDP from the ruling All Progressives Party (APC) with the assurances of getting the ticket for his third term in the red chamber against the wish of a former governor of the state, Gabriel Suswam.

The duo had, in the 2015 general elections, contested the senatorial seat, which Gemade won.

It would be recalled that in the buildup to the senatorial primary of the PDP in 2014, Gemade had defected to APC realising that Suswam, then a sitting governor, would frustrate his ambition on the platform of PDP.

With his defection to SDP, the tussle will again be rekindled between Gemade and Suswan for the Benue North East senatorial ticket.
