The 107 Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Camp, Lagos, yesterday paraded two suspects, Abiodun Akinsanya and Moses Johnson, for impersonation and illegal possession of military camouflages and accoutrements.

The duo were arrested at the Langbasa area of Ajah, Lagos, when they were accosted by NAF Provost Air Station operatives on patrol and they produced their fake identity cards after identifying themselves as NAF personnel.

Although they identified themselves as aircraftmen, what gave them away was the identity card, which was the old design used by the NAF before it was changed to the new one with chip.

After preliminary interrogation, the NAF personnel stormed their residence and unearthed several military uniforms, especially desert camouflages and other military accoutrements including Boots and customised NAF belts.

Confirming the arrest, the Commander 107 NAF Camp, Air Commodore Abubakar Yusuf, said once the duo were picked up, a raid at their apartment uncovered several military uniforms and accoutrements.

He also said the harmonisation of the camouflage for the military has helped in curbing cases of impersonation by fraudsters, who use the uniform to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

People in most countries are allowed to wear camouflage, as long as they’re not going to be engaging in nefarious activities in the name of the military. And camouflage is sold openly.

Not in a country with brutal military institution. Take a look at the newly released video of the training of the Army recruits, they were beaten like animals and a video last year of Defense Academy cadets beating a citizen after a compliment. Our’s is an uncultured, barbaric society devoid any modicum of decency. In fact, the sitting COAS was accused of owning properties in Dubai and still maintains his position in the face of obvious case of abuse of office. In the decades of military rule, Nigerians were tagged “bloody civilians” and brutalized. So, no to camouflage, we do not have the means to enforce the law and the mindset of uniformed men is like an army of occupation.
