Akeredolu, Oskar Ibru, others bag Igbinedion University’s honorary doctorate degrees

The Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), is one of the four distinguished personalities to be conferred with honorary degrees of Igbinedion University Okada at its 15th convocation ceremony holding on Saturday November 25, 2017.

The Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), is one of the four distinguished personalities to be conferred with honorary degrees of Igbinedion University Okada at its 15th convocation ceremony holding on Saturday November 25, 2017.

According to a statement from the school and signed by Obajide Ilugbo, principal public relations officer and Head, Public & External Relations Unit, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, other honorary degree recipients are, Olorogun Oskar Christopher Ibru (CEO, Ibru Organization), Chief (Dr.) Innocent Chukwuma (Chairman/CEO, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company) and Alhaji Umar Ibrahim Mantu, founder Global African Awareness Initiative.

The statement said they would also be inducted into the Board of Honorary Graduates. Previous inductees include, the late Dr. Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa (2004); Dr. (Mrs.) Winnie Mandela (2004); Dr. John A. Kuffour, former President of Ghana (2012); King of Zululand, Dr. Zwelithini Goodwill Kabhekuzulu; Dr. P. J. Patterson, former Prime Minister of Jamaica (2007); wife of the Prime Minister of Kenya, Dr. (Mrs.) Betty Ida Odinga (2011), Dr. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene of Kumasi, Ghana.

Among the indigenous recipients are, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former Vice-President (2003), Alhaji Shehu Shagari, former president (2004); Admiral Augustus A. Aikhomu, former Vice-President (2005); General Abdulsalami Abubakar (2006), former President; Dr. Mike Adenuga (Jr.) (2004), Alhaji (Dr.) Muhammad Saad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto (2012), Oba (Dr.) Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, Ooni of Ife (2016) and others.

A total of 634 graduands will be awarded first degrees and higher degrees at the convocation ceremonies, 11 of whom have first class honours degrees, 220 second class upper degrees, 248 second class lower degrees and 15 third class degrees.

The post graduate school will also present a total of 31 graduands comprising; 14 Ph.Ds., five master’s degree and 12 post-graduate diploma.

A convocation lecture, titled, ‘Restructuring and the Future of Nigeria’, will be delivered tomorrow as part of the award of first degrees and prizes by Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, former Nigerian Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union.

Toyo was a member of the House of Representatives, representing Calabar / Odukpani Federal Constituency in the National Assembly. She is the founder of Gender and Development Action (GADA).

She is a veteran in gender advocacy and issues pertaining to governance, a lawyer and social advocate of over 30 years who has been engaged in several social issues including those of human deprivation, inequalities and women’s rights.
