Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode led an All Male Walk against Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) on Thursday and promised that his administration would leave no stone unturned to ensure that all perpetrators of such crimes are made to face the wrath of the law. Speaking to participants at the walk which started from Ikeja under Bridge through Awolowo Way to Lagos House in Alausa, he noted that while several programmes ranging from the provision of legal aid, shelter and psychological counseling services have been designed to assist sexual abuse victims, the State Government has realized that to eradicate SGBV, it must address the violent behavior of men when it comes to Rape, Domestic Violence and Child Abuse.

Addressing attendees at the Lagos House, Ikeja, Governor Ambode reiterated that it was time for men to stand up and take the bull by the horn in tackling the menace of SGBV in the society, as recent research has shown that women are more prone to being victims of these violent crimes. Pointing out that men committed most crimes of these nature, he worried that children born and raised in such violent arrangements would grow up thinking these kind of way was the norm.

The walk, witnessed the participation of dignitaries from all walks of life, including members of the State Executive Council, members of the State House of Assembly, key government functionaries, entertainers, youths, artisans, workers, among others. Celebrities were also present to add colour to the event, amongst who were Alibaba, Teju Babyface, Omobaba and Bez.

He further urged everyone to sustain the conversation, see more and do more, as the government couldn’t do everything. He assured that his administration would continue to do more to ensure the rights and welfare of the most vulnerable in the State are protected.

The walk was part of activities marking the domestic violence month with the theme, Promoting Positive Masculinity: Men as flag bearers in the fight to end sexual and gender based violence.
