APM Terminals Apapa Ltd. has aided the treatment of Cancer patients in Nigeria by renovating the Oncology Section of the Radiotherapy and Oncology Department of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

This is contained in a statement made available to newsmen on Friday in Lagos by the General Manager. Communication and Sustainability of the company, Mr Austine Fischer.

According to the statement, at the inauguration of the renovated clinic, the Deputy Managing Director, APM Terminals Apapa, Mr Olufemi Ransome-Kuti said cancer was a major cause of death.

Ransome-Kuti said this aroused a passion within the company to support the care and treatment of cancer patients.

“The renovation of the Oncology clinic is a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative of our company in line with one of our core values, constant care, which focuses on sustainable business environment.

“These include our employees, customers and their families,’’ the company said in the statement.

The Head of Radiotherapy and Oncology Department of LUTH, Prof. Remi Ajekigbe said along with everyone in the department, he was happy to see the Oncology clinic take a facelift.

Ajekigbe thanked the management of APM Terminals for the initiative.

According to him, cancer is a gloomy disease and taking care of cancer patients in a gloomy environment will be double jeopardy.

A recovered cancer patient, Mrs Abigail Simon-Hart, who worked with APM Terminals on renovating the Oncology clinic, praised the company for taking the lead and sponsoring the renovation work.

Simon-Hart, Managing Director, Bricon Global Consult, called or early detection of cancer and the need to have an environment conducive for treatment, to aid speedy recovery of patients.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that APM Terminals Apapa is the largest container facility by capacity with a container throughput (imports and exports) of about 700,000 in 2014.

APM Terminals Apapa is the busiest container terminal in the West Africa, handling 50 per cent of Lagos in-bound containers.

The sum of 350 million dollars has been invested in its expansion programme since 2006 when the concession programme was concluded.
